What happens when the ultimate Shinigami-wielding genius sits across the board from the most dangerous psychological manipulator? 🍎♟️

This crossover illustration brings two of anime’s most brilliant and terrifying minds—Light Yagami from Death Note and Johan Liebert from Monster—to the same chessboard.

Bringing this psychological standoff to life in this Anime style Fan Art was an incredible conceptual challenge. I wanted the composition to reflect their silent, deadly war of intellect, framed by the looming, sinister presence of Ryuk and the iconic nameless monster watching closely from the shadows.

Perfecting the moody, dramatic lighting and polishing the crisp, clean lines of this Digital/Vector Art really helped emphasize the tension in the room. Who do you think is winning this game?
Phase 1: Conceptual Sketch
Sketching the Board
Establishing the intense eye contact, the angle of the chessboard, and the looming presence of the monsters in the background.
Phase 2: Clean Lineart
Inking Characters & Details
Rebuilding the sketch with clean lines for the characters, followed by drawing the complex perspective of the individual chess pieces.
Phase 3: Flat Colors & Base Rendering
Color Blocking & Shading
Setting the base color palette and applying shading to give the characters, clothing, and the chess pieces their initial volume and 3D form.
Phase 4: Final & Alternate Version
The Final Polish & Alternate "Finger on Head" Pose
For the final touch, dramatic atmospheric lighting and rich poster effects were added to the room. Additionally, a second version was created featuring Johan Liebert doing his popular, iconic "finger on head" pose.
